Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
